Later this year, The Macomb Group will be wrapping up several important projects for a large criminal justice center in Southeast Michigan. The company is supplying an array of applied mechanical materials, such as pipe, fittings, and controls for the justice center, which, when completed, will incorporate courtroom space with adult and juvenile detention facilities.

According to Heating Division Manager Ian Thomas, Macomb’s involvement with the construction project began in 2017 with design and budgeting activities, followed by an extensive bidding process.

“Over the course of this phase, system design work changed several  times, as well as the overall location of the construction site,” he said.

Alan Thomas, Macomb’s outside sales representative for the project, noted that one major piece of equipment supplied was a PRV, or pressure reducing valve station, which regulates heating pressure in various parts of a building.

As for any supply chain issues affecting The Macomb Group during the project, Ian Thomas explained that with careful and advance material purchases, his team was able to overcome any supply issues.

“It really did not affect us greatly,” he said. “At one point it was difficult to get certain sizes of PVC materials due to weather-related plant shutdowns in Texas.”

Now that the justice center project is winding down, with occupancy slated by yearend, what can be learned from the experience?

“When we do a job like this,” said Ian Thomas, “the most complicated part is the bidding process. In the first round of bidding, we have little detail about the project. Over time, the knowledge multiplies. You must make sure you are always present, and there every time there’s a (project-related) event. You keep that job in sharp focus.”
